What is mismatch?

01 / ACADEMIC MISMATCH

Entering onto the wrong course can become an expensive detour.

Academic mismatch occurs when a student enrols onto a university course that is misaligned with their prior attainment. For example, imagine an A*A*A* student, enrolling on a course that only asked for BBB grades. Overmatching occurs when students enter onto "tougher" courses than their grades would predict, whereas undermatching means a student has entered onto a relatively less-selective course. Don't mismatch.

The impact of mismatch on students can be significant. It can lead to spillover effects on the respective students continuation rate, their final grade classification, and long term financial outcomes. This issue is largely avoidable.

We believe that prospective students should search outwards.

As opposed to traditional matching through UCAS, the Degree Matchmaker makes finding suitable courses streamlined, minimising the chance that you miss a potentially very relevant course. It does this by allowing you to input your predicted (achieved) grades, subject and topic interests, before ranking and presenting them with this in mind.

01 - Qualifications

02 - Academic interests

Exact titles appear first. Related titles and themes follow; unrelated courses are excluded.

Module matching uses individual modules listed for the course entry year. Older lists remain available in Saved for reference.

Required subjects and subject-specific grades are strict checks. Preferences do not affect eligibility. Check each course for GCSEs, portfolios and other conditions.

Exact course titles come first, followed by module relevance and grade distance. Subject requirements are a filter, not a weight.
